Buckeye Swamp

The Buckeye Swamp area is pronounced with large rock outcroppings and steep hillsides believed to have been carved out by the pre-historic Teays River drainage. The Buckeye Creek currently snakes its way thru the lower portion of the gorge thru what was a 28 acre lake and wetlands previously known as Buckeye Swamp.
In prior ownership, somewhere in the mid 1970’s the earthen dam was removed. What remains is the old lake bottom in that is subject to seasonal flooding and maintains a riparian corridor skirted with emergent wetland habitat.
These landscapes provide for a unique habitat and ecosystem within Southeastern Ohio with sandy well drained soils, mature woods, and riparian areas the diversity of wildlife and vegetation include:
We have done some restoration work of hemlocks and basswood within suitable areas of this area of natural beauty and scenery.
Funds for this project were a conglomeration of $500,000 of mitigation funds from the US Fish and Wildlife Service thru the Columbia Gas Expansion project, and $500,000 from Clean Ohio Conservation Fund.

- Many Songbirds including several species of warblers
- Northern fence lizard
- Mountain Laurel and Hemlock
- Diverse hard and soft mast forest including white, red, and black oaks
- Snakes of several species
- Bobcat and Black Bear
