Ohio Valley Conservation Coalition is attempting to coordinate a joint project between several entities for an approximate 20-40 acre wetland / habitat restoration and education area in Jackson Co Ohio. This area lies within what is believed to be the pre-historic Teays River Area bottomlands. We have been granted funds from Ohio Public Works Clean Ohio to purchase the property that is currently an agricultural field with Buckeye Creek running along nearly 1/2 of the property boundary. We want to restore the area into a wetland, with a walking path, and educational kiosks as to the importance of wetlands both as habitat and water quality.
OVCC has acquired the funding thru Clean Ohio to purchase the property in fee as well as some funds toward the restoration of the area into a wetland. Our estimated cost to complete the project is $133,000 of which we have already acquired a significant portion. Our complete vision is to have an area of wetlands surrounded by a walking path of approximately 1 mile, that will be equipped with kiosks containing information on wetlands, educational components that are compliant with Ohio Department of Education Science curriculum mandates, hunting, fishing, and trapping and the balancing of ecosystems, etc that will all be open to the public. We also intend to complete some native plantings of wetland plants and woody vegetation of both common and uncommon varieties to add to the diversity of the surrounding ecosystem. Likewise, we would like to extend out pollinator program to this site as well.
Our grand scheme is to have at least 5 partners contribute (either with funds or professional services) so that we may have a diverse group working together, both locally and abroad to contribute their expertise toward the project and the components of the education. Current partners include:
If you have an interest in participating, please contact us and tell us how you would like to contribute to this project. The coordination for this project is being administered by Board members Joel Wood and Ryan Mapes.
